More about SarBears >>

I made my first teddy bear in October of 2002, while recovering from a serious illness. What started as a hobby soon turned into a full time endeavor, and I love every second of it. Before teddies I was pursuing a career in family medicine, but the stress and lack of creativity led me to second guess my career choice. Since I have always been artistic and creative, when I discovered bear artistry it was an immediate fit, and I haven't looked back since.

I create each bear by hand from sketching the original design, hand/machine sewing the bear itself, sculpting and shading, and designing and constructing clothes and accessories. Depending of the complexity of a bear, it can take anywhere from a day to two weeks to finish a creation.

I have been featured several times as artist of the month on online teddy bear sites. My bears have been showcased in teddy bear magazines such as Teddy Bear Review, and Teddy Bear Scene. One of my early pieces, “A Teddy Bear Picnic”, was adopted by the Dancing Bear Folk Art Museum in Wyoming, and is on display there. My Halloween vignette has won a people’s choice award. Recently, I completed a fisherman bear named Mulligan, who is to be featured in the 2006 Children’s Aid Foundation Teddy Bear Calendar.

I often get asked about my style, and I have to say it changes all the time. I love creating all different types of bears. I love the charm of a traditional bear, but it can be so much fun to experiment with colour, texture and design to create whimsical bears. I also love making miniature Japanese style bears. My designs are not limited to bears alone. I also create puppies, bunnies, frogs, cats, monkeys – whatever my imagination comes up with. In fact, by creations don’t stop with soft sculpture. I have recently taken up knitting, and have a passion for felted bags, which may make their way to the website soon – you never know what’s coming at SarBears.

On a personal note, I am married and have a 17 month old son, Rowan. We are expecting another baby in two short months, so it will be a busy next year in our house!

I want to thank everyone who has supported me in this endeavor over the past three years. First and foremost, my husband Jacob, who has believed in me, stood with me at shows, given lots of oohs and aahs, and without his support I wouldn’t be here. My family, who grew up seeing my wide range of creations, endless hours on the sewing machine, and huge messes -- in particular, my brother Peter, who adopted the first bear I ever made. Thanks to my friends for the moral support and for coming to my early shows, just to see what this teddy bear stuff was all about. Thanks to my fellow artists, and of course a huge thanks to my collectors.
