I made my first teddy bear in October of 2002, while recovering from a serious illness. What started as a hobby soon turned into a full time endeavor, and I love every second of it. Since I have always been artistic and creative, when I discovered bear artistry it was an immediate fit, and I haven't looked back since.

SarBears is a one-person artist endeavor started by Sarah Pendergrast in 2002. Sarah has had a life long love of both teddy bears and crafts, so it seemed a natural fit to begin designing and selling her own. Sarah graduated from Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Science in 1993, and from Dalhousie medical school in 1999. It came as a bit of a surprise to some when she gave up a career as a family doctor to create teddy bears. Those who know her well were not so shocked – some were even relieved to see her switch to a career that suited her creative personality and passion for art. To read Sarah’s full story, click here.

Teddy bears have been around for just over 100 years, and our love for them never seems to wane. Some people hold on to their tattered teds from childhood for their entire lives. Others develop a passion for collecting them, and have entire rooms filled with their adorable faces. There are so many types of bears to collect, from cute plush toys manufactured by large companies, to very special one-of-a-kind works of art, created by a group of people who refer to themselves as “Teddy Bear Artists”. An artist teddy bear is one that has been created from the initial concept, through design, choice of materials, construction, sculpting and special touches by the artist, and are mostly done as one-of-a-kind, or very small limited editions. The detail and quality in these bears cannot be replicated in bears that are mass-produced, making the product special and unique, and one that is sure to be treasured for generations.

SarBears are made from the highest quality fabrics and fibers. The majority of bears are made from mohair, which comes from the fur of the angora goat. Mohair fabrics are produced primarily by specialized mills in Europe, and then imported by several North American distributors. The variety of textures, colours and finishes are almost infinite, and SarBears uses a wide variety of these fabrics to create all types of bears from the traditional to the very whimsical. Other special touches include premium quality glass eyes (some even hand-painted), ultrasuede and leather paw-pads, hand embroidered noses and mouths, and extensive sculpting and shading. Most of the bears come with minimal clothing or accessories, although some are spectacularly costumed with clothing hand-made made from the finest fabrics and yarns.

Whether you are a seasoned arctophile, or just have a love of beautiful hand-made treasures, SarBears has something for you. Bears can be custom-designed to be given as special gifts for loved ones or as a special treat for yourself. SarBears have many small parts and are not considered toys, and are therefore not safe for young children to play with. However, don’t let that discourage you from a buying a special work of art for the newest member of your family, one that will be treasured for a lifetime.

SarBears creations can be purchased directly from the SarBears website, and are also available on eBay and at bear shows. Check the News link to find out about upcoming classes, shows and workshops.
